Ireland’s Travel Tech Companies are Flying High

In travel and aviation, is soaring to new heights; Ireland’s reputation in aircraft leasing is unmatched across the globe. Ireland is home to 40% of the world’s fleet of leased aircraft meaning that 1 in 4 of the world’s planes are leased from Ireland, representing over €100 Billion in assets. Matched with this is Ireland’s importance as a tourism hub; Almost 11m people visit Ireland each year equating to AU$10 billion to the Irish economy.

It’s no surprise therefore that Ireland has emerged as a leader in world travel technology. Enterprise Ireland has assisted in the development of a cluster of world class companies, covering everything from reservation technologies, payment and ICT solution providers, and international travel agencies. To support this development, Enterprise Ireland have launched the Propeller Programme, a start-up accelerator designed to support the continued expansion of Ireland’s aviation and aerospace start-up ecosystem. 

Ireland has a wealth of leading, innovative technologies to support the travellers the world over. Below we profile some of the most exciting Irish businesses who are revolutionizing the travel experience and developing niche, customer-focused solutions for the travel industry:

Adams & Butler

Adams & Butler is an upscale DMC offering unique, authentic travel experiences tailored to clients’ personal preferences using the finest castle and boutique hotels, private stately mansions, country guesthouses and world-renowned driver guides. Luxury destinations include Taupo New Zealand, Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef, The Whitsundays and Yulara, Northern Territory.


Boxever was originally founded by former Datalex employees Dave O ‘Flanagan, Alan Giles, and Dermot O’Connor in 2011. This Irish SAAS travel company produces offers a cloud-based solution that connects all customer, product and operational data, letting their client personalize 1:1 and deliver predictive offers on every channel, across every customer journey. Boxever acts as the “brain” within the marketing (and business) tech ecosystem, taking in all data about the customer, deciding what should happen next and executing that action through the most appropriate channels – in real time, as it happens. CarTrawler is the world’s leading B2B travel technology platform providing multimodal transport solutions to almost one billion passengers annually. CarTrawler is a B2B brand and does not sell car rental or other ground transport solutions directly to the public. They help their partners to build their own brands for car rental and other ground transportation solutions and work with leading airlines such as Virgin Australia

City Wonders

Established in 2004, City Wonders began as an innovative tour to taking small groups of visitors on a walk around historic Rome. From there the company grew rapidly to become one of the largest tour companies Europe, adding more product offerings throughout Italy, Vatican City, and Paris. The company has now grown to encompass the more than the 150 tours and 30 destinations, bookable directly on their website, or through a global network of travel distributors.

Currency Fair

CurrencyFair gives ordinary people access to foreign exchange rates normally reserved for banks and market professionals, making it cheaper to transfer money internationally. Currency Fair is now a global operation with over 90 staff and offices in Ireland, Australia and the UK.


While recent deployments of Daon’s mobile biometrics platform has been within the banking sector, border control deployments remain an important part of the company’s business operations, having long been a core area of expertise.  Daon has successfully deployed a biometric pre-clearance system at Dublin Airport, specifically for United States of American Customs and Border Protection and a solution has also been implemented as part of an upgrade of a major border control system in Asia.


Fexco is the originator of Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and is the global market leader in the provision of DCC services providing solutions to 100,000+ merchant locations with over 35 multi-currency enabled acquiring banks. Beginning within the niche of hostel bookings, Hostelworld have since defied their name to become the go-to website for finding accommodation at campsites, B&Bs and hostels around the world. Hostelworld is headquartered in Dublin with bases in London, Porto, Seoul, Shanghai and Sydney and employs around 250 people.


icabbi provides booking and dispatch software for the Taxi and Private Hire industry. They transform businesses by providing a true technology partner. iCabbi’s platform delivers a superior experience for call takers, controllers, drivers and passengers.  The company reduces operational costs, increases efficiency through automation, resulting in happier drivers and happier customers.


Mobacar uses Artificial Intelligence to gain a deep cognitive understanding of customers, predict their specific mobility needs and fulfil this through their global ground transportation network in real time. TIC Brugger (Biztweet)

TIC’s flagship product is the IATA award winning software, BizTweet. BizTweet is a social decision software that uses Twitter and Facebook to increase a corporation’s ability to communicate automatically with their customers.
